Class Work

This week we looked at typography and the different components that make it up. We were initially tasked with selecting a typeface and writing our name or our brand name to identify the different elements of the typeface, I decided to use my name as I am still conflicted on my brand between two names. I found this task to be quite informative as I wasn’t really familiar with some of the characteristics of types, I wasn’t aware of terminal, bowl and eye to name a few, so going forward I will have a greater knowledge on how type is made up.

Our second task was to take the words: Click, Cut, Left, Look, Back, Reflect, Bounce and make these words into wordmarks. I found this task quite fun but also a bit difficult as I struggled to come up with a suitable word mark for the words: Cut and Back, So I focused on the others first. I started with click and the first thing that came to my mind was a mouse pointer so for my wordmark for click I added the pointer to replace the dot on the I. I moved onto left which was quite straightforward as I extended the T to become an arrow pointing left. The third word I completed was Look and I immediately thought of placing small circles in the O’s to make it appear like eyes. The next word I completed was Reflect, which after thinking how I could portray it I decided to invert the E as it is the only letter in reflect that repeats. I then moved to bounce which made me think of having a ball bouncing as the O. After completing most of the wordmarks it made it easier to come up with one for the remaining words, for Cut I sliced part of the U and the T to make it look like a straight slice through the word. Lastly for Back I decided to make the A and the C smaller and white to try and make them appear further away.

Research

I looked into different types of logos and how brands can leave an impression on a customer purely from how their logo looks.

Wordmarks

FedEx use a san-serif typeface called Futura with bold lettering, they also incorporate an arrow in the wordmark between the E and the X which is quite hard to see at first but it further solidifies the wordmark and is a key factor in the iconic logo’s design. The newest FedEx logo was created in the 1990s which proves that this logo is timeless as most logos and designs from the 90s would look outdated today.

The vans wordmark was created in 1966 using a modified version of Helvetica and they have continued to use the same wordmark since. The lettering of the logo stands for strength, stability and confidence.

Lettermarks

The New York Yankees use a letter mark for their badge, I particularly like this lettermark as some people might not realise that the letters N and Y are displayed together. The yankees have proved that a lettermark can be as strong as other types of logos because the yankees have one of the most recognisable sports logos.
