In week 3 we started to look at typography and how it is fundamental within design, we looked at how type can be broken down. I had never realised how detailed and important typography is even with things like news headlines and how they have to have the correct type to engage readers.

For our first exercise in class we were tasked with picking a letter to show how different it can appear when it changes position and weight within a frame, i chose the letter K and we created it on figma:

We then picked another letter and we had to change the letter by adding white space. I picked the letter G, i particularly like frame six as you can still understand that is the letter G but it could also be used as an arrow to point at something.

We were given information on a performance that Hozier was hosting and we then created a design on figma while making sure we use the right type and colours.

We also looked at Dieter Rams who is a German designer. He came up with the ten principles for good design. Rams worked with the company Braun to help design things like film projectors, calculators and radios. His ten principles of design are good design:

  1. Is innovative
  2. Makes a product useful
  3. Is aesthetic
  4. Makes a product understandable
  5. Is unobtrusive
  6. Is honest
  7. Is long-lasting
  8. Is thorough down to the last detail
  9. Is environmentally friendly
  10. Involves as little design as possible
